FOIA appeal sparks debate over document transparency

During a recent government meeting, the board addressed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) appeal submitted by Teresa Hamsi concerning communications related to the Army Corps permitting process. Devin Sullivan, the specialist assistant attorney general for the authority, reported that while documents were provided in response to the FOIA request, some were withheld due to attorney-client privilege. However, Sullivan identified one document that had been mistakenly withheld and recommended that it be released.

The board unanimously approved Sullivan's recommendation to grant the appeal for the one document while denying it for the remaining privileged documents. This decision underscores the authority's commitment to transparency while maintaining necessary legal protections.

The meeting also included a scheduling discussion for future gatherings, with the next meeting set for October 18, 2024. The location is yet to be confirmed, but it is anticipated to be at a different venue than the current one.

Public comments were a significant part of the agenda, with five submissions received and four individuals signed up to speak. Scott Newman, president of Mackinac City, expressed strong support for the Enbridge Corporation, highlighting their transparency and community involvement in local emergency services. Tom Chastain, post commander of the local American Legion, echoed this sentiment, noting Enbridge's financial support for the post's renovations, which have revitalized the community space.
