In a recent government meeting, officials provided an update on the transition of waste management services in Canton Township, following the decision to switch from GFL to Priority Waste. John Selmy from the Department of Public Works (DPW) outlined the timeline and challenges faced during this transition, which began with a competitive bidding process initiated in June 2023 due to ongoing service issues with GFL.
The township received three bids from Titan, GFL, and Priority Waste, ultimately selecting Priority Waste in February 2024. A significant change in service includes the introduction of garbage carts, which has raised concerns among residents regarding cart sizes, particularly for those with limited storage space. Selmy noted that adjustments were made to accommodate these concerns by providing smaller carts where necessary.
As of July 1, Priority Waste began taking over GFL's assets, but the transition has not been without complications. Residents have reported confusion over missed pickups, particularly for yard waste, which has been exacerbated by a recent holiday and inclement weather. The DPW has received numerous calls from residents, primarily regarding yard waste collection, with many expressing frustration over delays and inconsistent service.
Board members acknowledged the challenges faced by Priority Waste, particularly in inheriting GFL's outdated equipment, which has hindered their ability to provide timely service. They emphasized the importance of effective communication with residents to mitigate confusion during this transition period. The board also expressed concerns about the timing of the transition, suggesting that a later start date might have allowed for a smoother rollout.
Looking ahead, the full transition to Priority Waste's services, including the use of new technology and trucks, is scheduled for July 29. Officials are hopeful that this will improve service reliability and address the current issues residents are facing. The board plans to continue monitoring the situation closely and will hold further discussions with Priority Waste to ensure that service expectations are met.
