Community divided over future of tennis and pickleball courts

During a recent government meeting, community members voiced their concerns regarding the ongoing pickleball and tennis court issues in Mountain View. The discussions highlighted the need for better integration of pickleball facilities while addressing the needs of the tennis community.

Resident Miss Saglan raised the idea of implementing a pilot project similar to one in Los Altos, where tennis courts are shared with pickleball players. She noted that this model includes designated evenings for pickleball at local schools, suggesting it could be a viable solution for Mountain View.

Mike Rogers, a former president of the Mountain View Tennis Club, expressed strong opposition to the proposed removal of the tennis wall at Cuesta Park, emphasizing its importance to the local tennis community. He argued that the wall is crucial for junior team practices and matches, and its removal would significantly impact usage. Rogers also questioned the timeline for returning facilities to the tennis community, highlighting that temporary solutions have persisted for five years without a clear resolution.

Rogers proposed a plan to create additional pickleball courts by utilizing underused areas of existing tennis facilities, suggesting that this could be done with minimal disruption to green space. He also raised concerns about the recent increase in court fees, which he believes has deterred community players from participating in tennis. He warned that similar pricing strategies for pickleball could lead to a decline in recreational use.
