Community engagement drives ambitious parks improvement plan

During a recent government meeting, community leaders and stakeholders gathered to discuss the findings from two public meetings held the previous week, focusing on community input regarding local parks and recreational services. Neelie Bhatt from Next Practice Partners and Indeeksha Rawat from WRT presented a comprehensive overview of the engagement process, which included various outreach efforts such as bilingual focus groups, surveys, and community pop-up events.

The meeting highlighted the significant participation from the community, with over 3,200 engagements recorded across multiple platforms. Attendees expressed appreciation for the quality and variety of parks, emphasizing their accessibility and the dedication of staff. However, concerns were raised regarding accessibility from different neighborhoods and the need for improved amenities, such as shade structures and community gardens.

Key priorities identified by the community included the need for sustainable funding sources for park development and maintenance, enhanced walkability to connect neighborhoods with parks, and ensuring that recreational offerings reflect the diverse community they serve. The meeting concluded with a commitment to continue engaging the community throughout the planning process, with further opportunities for input as the project progresses toward the development of a strategic plan.
