Residents rally against proposed traffic stop ordinance

During a recent government meeting, the second reading of an ordinance proposing an all-way stop at the intersection of South 38th and Newcastle Drive was tabled for further consideration. This decision followed feedback from local residents who expressed concerns about the proposed traffic changes, indicating they had not been adequately consulted during the petition process.

City officials conducted a thorough examination of the intersection after receiving these community concerns. They reported that a survey of approximately 900 vehicles revealed no significant speeding issues, with the highest recorded speed being around 32 to 33 miles per hour. The officials noted that while there is a 25-mile-per-hour speed limit sign on Stonecrest, there are no clear speed limit indicators for drivers entering South 38th from Harrison or Newcastle, which may contribute to confusion among motorists.

In light of these findings, city representatives suggested alternative measures to improve traffic safety, such as installing additional signage or traffic calming features, rather than proceeding with the all-way stop. This recommendation was made to address the potential negative impact on nearby residents, particularly concerning noise pollution from increased traffic at a stop intersection.

The traffic commission had not been privy to this new information during their previous review of the ordinance, prompting the need for further discussion and analysis before any final decisions are made.
