County Board Approves Controversial Sand and Gravel Mining Permit

In a recent government meeting, the County Board approved Resolution 24024, which denies the need for an Environmental Assessment Worksheet (EAW) for a proposed sand and gravel mining operation by Milestone Materials. The resolution was passed with a majority vote, despite some opposition, indicating that the project can proceed without further environmental review at this stage.

The discussion centered around an interim use permit application for the mining operation, which is set to take place in Northfield Township. The Planning Commission had previously recommended approval of the project with 18 conditions, but following further review, staff proposed an updated list of 26 conditions for the Board's consideration.

Key conditions outlined for the interim use permit include compliance with regulations from various environmental agencies, a six-year $100,000 bond for road repair and site restoration, and restrictions on the mining area and operational hours. The permit will be valid for five years, requiring renewal or restoration of the site upon expiration. Additionally, strict setbacks from property lines, roads, and protected streams have been mandated to minimize environmental impact.

The Board's decision marks a significant step forward for Milestone Materials, as they prepare to advance their mining operations under the newly established conditions.
