San Diego appoints new fire chief amid community safety push

The City Clerk Archives has unveiled a new exhibit titled \"Out and Proud in San Diego,\" created in collaboration with Lambda Archives of San Diego. This exhibit, located on the 12th floor outside the council chambers, will be on display from July 8 to September 8, 2024. It aims to highlight the historical and cultural significance of the LGBTQIA+ community in San Diego, featuring notable artifacts such as photographs from the early days of the San Diego LGBTQ Community Center and the first permit for the San Diego Pride Parade.

During the meeting, Council Member Von Wilpert addressed the recent violence in the nation, referencing a near-assassination attempt on a former president and emphasizing the urgent need to combat gun violence. He highlighted alarming statistics from the Brady Organization, noting that Americans are significantly more likely to be victims of gun violence compared to other industrialized nations. In response, the city has enacted the Ira Sharp Firearm Dealer Accountability Act, which will reform how the city engages with gun dealers, ensuring they comply with laws to prevent crime guns from entering the streets.

The meeting also included the confirmation of Deputy Chief Robert Logan as the new Fire Chief for the City of San Diego, following the retirement of Chief Colin Stoll. Mayor Gloria praised Logan's extensive experience and commitment to community engagement, emphasizing the importance of this appointment for public safety. The recruitment process involved a thorough search and community input, ultimately leading to Logan's selection as the ideal candidate to lead the fire rescue department.
