Fire safety urged as community faces rising emergency calls

In a recent government meeting, officials reported on the successful filling of all 40 seats in the community's emergency preparedness training program, highlighting the importance of community engagement in safety initiatives. The meeting also addressed the rural fire district's activity, revealing a total of 30 fire calls and 42 medical calls in April, followed by 17 fire calls and 37 medical calls in May. Notably, Celina Fire Department dispatched ambulances for every medical call, underscoring their critical role in emergency response.

A significant incident was discussed, where a fire sparked by a firecracker near Waterwell in Niles burned approximately 100 acres on June 27. This incident prompted a call for mutual aid from neighboring fire districts, emphasizing the need for heightened fireworks safety awareness as the Fourth of July approaches. Officials urged the community to use fireworks responsibly, recommending clear, open areas away from dry vegetation and the presence of water sources.

The meeting also touched on the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training, which has seen high demand, resulting in a waitlist for participants. Officials announced plans for additional training sessions, aiming to accommodate more participants while maintaining quality instruction. The current introductory class is designed to familiarize attendees with CERT and personal preparedness tips, with certification training to follow.
