NAACP warns of hazardous waste proposal in Natchez

During a recent meeting, Joyce Arsenault Mathis, president of the Natchez branch of the NAACP, raised significant concerns regarding a proposal from Complete Oilfield Disposal to modify the Adams County solid waste management plan. Mathis emphasized that the proposed changes could pose health risks to local residents and disrupt the community's waste reduction strategies. The NAACP urged the Adams County Board of Supervisors to reject the proposal, asserting that it does not meet the necessary demonstration and determination of need as outlined by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.

In addition to the environmental concerns, Mathis announced the upcoming annual conference of the Mississippi NAACP, scheduled for November 6-10, 2024, in Nashville. She requested the Board's support in sponsoring a table at the event, which would cost $800 and seat ten people, to represent the Adams County Board of Supervisors.

The meeting also included public comments addressing various community issues, such as maintenance requests for local roads and congratulations for community members achieving recognition at national levels. Notably, a resident expressed gratitude for individuals who assisted in rescuing children from the Mississippi River, highlighting the community's spirit and involvement in local safety. The meeting concluded with acknowledgments of recent retirements and condolences for families in mourning.
