City leaders unveil ambitious plans for Alamogordo revitalization

In a recent city commission meeting in Alamogordo, community leaders gathered to discuss significant developments and initiatives aimed at enhancing the local economy and addressing recent challenges. One of the key presentations came from the Main Street Alamo Board, which provided a recap of the past fiscal year. The board highlighted a successful partnership with the city, noting that their operating budget has increased to approximately $83,000, up from the minimum required amount. A standout project was the Side Street Art initiative, which raised over $28,000 through local sponsorships and grants, showcasing community involvement in beautifying the downtown area.

The board also introduced the Alamogordo Venture Academy, a small business accelerator program designed to support local entrepreneurs. This program has already seen 15 applicants, with seven businesses moving into a downtown location later this year. The initiative aims to revitalize vacant properties while fostering new business growth.

City Manager Rick spoke about the community's response to recent disasters, particularly the fire at Bonita Lake. He praised city staff for their quick action in constructing 22 detention ponds to mitigate debris flow into the lake, which has helped maintain water quality. The Fish and Game Commission is expected to assess the lake soon for potential fish stocking.

Additionally, the city is preparing for a major street construction project funded by a $1.9 million capital outlay grant. The project aims to enhance the downtown area, with plans for new murals and improved public spaces. The timeline for construction has faced delays due to COVID-19 and supply chain issues, but bids for the first phase have been issued.

The meeting also addressed community engagement, with a cleanup event scheduled for July 20, where residents can dispose of unwanted items at designated sites. This initiative aims to foster community pride and participation.
