Residents Demand Urgent Action to Tackle Dangerous Intersection

Residents of the Greenbrier Avenue and Shell Road intersection voiced urgent safety concerns during a recent city council meeting, highlighting a troubling pattern of accidents that has plagued the area. Over the past three years, the intersection has seen up to eight accidents, including two serious incidents just this past weekend, resulting in multiple injuries, including those of a child and a pregnant woman.

Community members expressed their frustration over the lack of effective safety measures despite numerous complaints and traffic studies conducted by the city. Homeowners reported feeling unsafe in their own yards and streets, fearing for their safety due to speeding vehicles. One resident recounted a harrowing experience where a vehicle crashed into her property, narrowly missing her grandson and pets.

In response to these concerns, city officials acknowledged the severity of the situation. A traffic study confirmed significant speeding issues at the intersection, and plans are underway to implement a four-way stop at Greenbrier and Shell Road, along with additional stop signs along Shell Road. Furthermore, the city plans to propose a $200 fine for speeding in the area, aimed at deterring reckless driving.

City officials also addressed the community's requests for speed bumps, stating that they generally do not recommend them in residential areas due to safety concerns. Instead, they emphasized the importance of targeted enforcement by the Hampton Police Department to address speeding issues.
