City Council Approves Controversial 52 Acre Annexation Plan

In a recent city council meeting, officials discussed two significant agenda items, including a proposed rezoning and a voluntary annexation application for a 52-acre property at the intersection of FM 84 and State Highway 91.

The council opened a public hearing regarding the rezoning of a property to allow for the use of metal building materials for its facade. After a brief discussion, the motion to approve the rezoning was unanimously passed.

The second item involved a public hearing on a voluntary annexation request for the aforementioned 52 acres, which aims to facilitate a planned mixed-use development. City staff recommended approval of the annexation, noting its potential benefits for the area.

However, concerns were raised by local resident Linneal Meza, who highlighted the anticipated increase in traffic due to the proposed development, which could add up to 1,500 vehicles to the intersection. Meza urged the council to address traffic safety and infrastructure improvements before any construction begins, emphasizing the need for adequate road capacity to accommodate the new development.

Josh McKinney, representing the development group, acknowledged the traffic concerns and assured that a comprehensive traffic study would be conducted in collaboration with city officials and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) as the project progresses.

The council closed the public hearing after inviting further comments, indicating a commitment to addressing community concerns as they move forward with the annexation and development plans.
