Berkeley approves youth voting for school board elections

In a significant move towards civic engagement, the Berkeley City Council has adopted an ordinance allowing youth aged 16 and 17 to vote in school board elections. This decision, made during a recent council meeting, follows the approval of Measure Y1 in 2016, which amended the city charter to permit such voting.

City officials, including Mr. Harvey, outlined that the ordinance not only authorizes youth voting but also establishes a framework for future elections, requiring the council to pass a resolution each election year to facilitate this process. The upcoming November 2024 election will be the first to implement this initiative.

The ordinance stipulates that no city funds will be allocated for youth voting; instead, costs will be covered by the Berkeley Unified School District. Additionally, the council has requested that the Alameda County registrar consider establishing a vote center at Berkeley High School to enhance accessibility for young voters.
