Youth voting initiative gains momentum in Berkeley elections

In a recent government meeting, council members expressed enthusiasm over the establishment of a vote center at Berkeley High Campus, aimed at increasing youth participation in elections. Council member Wang Grama highlighted the significance of this initiative, recalling the 2016 efforts by local youth to advocate for Measure Y1, which allowed 16- and 17-year-olds to vote in school board elections.

Grama emphasized the importance of empowering young voters, stating that they possess valuable insights into their needs and representation within the Berkeley Unified School District. The council member expressed hope that this initiative would pave the way for broader voting rights for young people, extending beyond school board elections to include city council and mayoral elections.

The discussion also touched on the necessity of educating eligible young voters about the new voting system. The city clerk acknowledged ongoing collaborations with the registrar of voters and the Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) to ensure the initiative's technical feasibility ahead of the November 2024 elections. Once confirmed, outreach efforts to educate young voters will be prioritized, with BUSD likely taking the lead in these initiatives.
