Minneapolis police staffing crisis sparks urgent legislative review

A recent government meeting highlighted significant updates regarding the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) and its staffing challenges, stemming from a 2022 study on problem nature calls. The discussion underscored that the data used in the study reflected a time when MPD had a higher staffing level, approximately 40% more than its current numbers.

Chief O'Hara, who has been in his position since late 2022, was acknowledged for implementing substantial organizational changes within the department. These adjustments are in response to the Minnesota Department of Human Rights (MDHR) settlement agreement and are also aimed at preparing for an anticipated consent decree.

The 2022 study focused on four key areas: staffing analysis, operations analysis, problem nature call analysis, and business process analysis. During the meeting, Director Joni Hodney and Deputy Chief Kingsbury were set to present on the actions taken since the report's release, as well as current data regarding problem nature calls and response times.

The meeting reflects ongoing efforts to address the challenges faced by the MPD, particularly in light of reduced staffing levels and the need for effective operational strategies.
