Residents rally to preserve historic Old Smyrna Road

During a recent Brentwood city commission meeting, residents voiced strong concerns regarding the preservation of Old Smyrna Road, emphasizing its historical significance and the need for careful consideration before making any modifications. One resident passionately argued that the road deserves more attention, highlighting its unique character and the importance of maintaining the city’s historical legacy for future generations.

The resident pointed out that recent road closures from late May to the end of June had not significantly disrupted traffic, suggesting that alternative routes were effectively utilized by drivers. They recalled previous city commission discussions about potential engineering modifications, which ultimately preserved the road's integrity. The speaker expressed their personal connection to the area, noting that they chose to live on Old Smyrna Road for its quaintness and historical charm.

In a call to action, the resident proposed several initiatives for the city to consider, including conducting an archaeological study at the future Windy Hill Park, collaborating with preservationists to enhance Old Smyrna Road's status as a historical landmark, and acquiring the Snead home, the oldest residence in Brentwood, for preservation purposes. They urged the commission to learn from other cities that have successfully balanced growth with historical preservation.

He noted that while his wife addressed the historical aspects, the community must also consider the safety implications of any proposed changes.
