City Council Launches Exciting Back to School Initiatives

The North Las Vegas City Council convened recently, with Mayor Goins Brown absent due to vacation. The meeting began with an invocation by Reverend Dr. Karen Anderson from the First African Methodist Episcopal Church, who highlighted the church's community service efforts, including a weekly food distribution that serves around 300 people.

Councilman Barron announced the upcoming annual baptismal giveaway at the Neighborhood Recreation Center on August 3rd, which will provide free backpacks, school supplies, and haircuts for children. He expressed gratitude to Amazon and other partners for their support.

Councilman Churcchio confirmed the receipt of a $50 million check from the Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority, crediting the board's improved management for the funding. He also promoted his own back-to-school event at Skyview YMCA on the same day as Barron's giveaway.

Councilwoman Garcia Anderson reported on her recent engagements, including a splash pad party at Craig Ranch Park and a women's safety awareness presentation by the North Las Vegas Police Department. She emphasized the importance of community safety and empowerment, particularly noting her daughter's newfound interest in law enforcement. Additionally, she attended a career expo that connected job seekers with over 450 available positions.
