The Dublin City School District is facing significant growth, with projections indicating an increase of 2,000 high school students over the next 8 to 10 years. Superintendent reported that this surge will necessitate the construction of a new school equivalent in size to Dublin Coffman High School, as the district currently adds approximately 345 students annually.
To address this challenge, the district plans to purchase the Cardinal Health Building for approximately $37 million, which could serve as an educational facility. This decision comes after a bond passed in 2023, granting the district the authority to issue an additional $40 million in debt without requiring further voter approval. The Cardinal Health site is seen as a viable option due to its existing infrastructure, including 1,283 parking spaces, which could alleviate traffic issues currently faced at Kaufman High School.
The district is also preparing for the opening of Bishop Elementary in fall 2025, which is expected to be overcapacity upon opening. Currently, modular classrooms are in use at Eversoll Run Middle School and Abraham Depp Elementary School, indicating an urgent need for additional space.
Community feedback has highlighted tax fatigue as a primary concern, with the district receiving about $1,000 per student from the state, while taxpayers cover the remaining $14,000 in expenses per pupil. The district is committed to exploring fiscally responsible options to accommodate its growing student population while being mindful of taxpayer concerns.
The Cardinal Health Building, with appropriate zoning and code changes, could potentially function as an early college campus and may evolve into a standalone high school in the future. The district is currently working with state building code officials to assess the necessary changes to facilitate this transition.
