Police crackdown on drug trafficking nets major seizures

In a recent government meeting, the Chief of the Investigative Services Bureau provided an overview of the bureau's operations, highlighting the critical work of the Criminal Investigations Division and the Crime Suppression Unit. The Criminal Investigations Division, staffed by detectives, handles a diverse range of cases categorized into crimes against persons—such as robbery, homicide, and sexual assault—and crimes against property, including burglary, theft, and fraud. Each detective manages approximately 20 new cases monthly.

The Crime Suppression Unit focuses on proactively addressing crime hotspots, particularly targeting narcotics distribution and illegal firearms possession. This unit collaborates closely with various local, state, and federal agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force and the Drug Enforcement Administration, to enhance their operational effectiveness.

Recent successes were reported, including a significant narcotics seizure in November 2023, where detectives arrested a suspect and confiscated half a kilogram of MDPV following a traffic stop. In December, a search warrant executed at a stash house led to the seizure of 225 packages of marijuana edibles, multiple kilograms of various drugs, and $52,000 in cash, which was forfeited to the city.

Additionally, the Crime Suppression Unit responded to gunfire in a neighborhood, leading to the discovery of drug paraphernalia and a subsequent search warrant execution. This operation resulted in the arrest of two individuals and the seizure of multiple firearms, including stolen weapons, along with $59,000 in drug proceeds.

These operations underscore the bureau's commitment to tackling crime and enhancing public safety through strategic partnerships and proactive law enforcement efforts.
