During a recent government meeting, Jefferson Middle School showcased the significant contributions of local contractor Jay McClain to its newly established STEM manufacturing program. The initiative, aimed at enhancing students' skills in technology and engineering, has received extensive support from various levels of government and the community.
McClain, who volunteers two to three days a week, has played a pivotal role in the program's development. His expertise has enabled students to engage in hands-on projects, including building birdhouses, creating furniture from pallet wood, and constructing light poles for school events. Notably, he has also spearheaded the introduction of a hydroponics program, following a field trip to Utah where students learned from successful high school models.
The program emphasizes not only technical skills but also the importance of fostering well-rounded citizens capable of supporting themselves and their families in the future. The school community expressed gratitude for McClain's dedication, highlighting that the program's achievements would not have been possible without his involvement.
The meeting also included a public forum segment, allowing community members to address topics not on the agenda, with a three-minute speaking limit for each participant. This segment underscores the school’s commitment to community engagement and transparency in its operations.
