Gabby Caraballo honored for life-saving act at school

The Chesapeake City Council convened on Tuesday evening, with Mayor West leading the session after a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. The meeting commenced with a special recognition for Gabby Caraballo, a fifth-grade student at Deep Creek Central Elementary School, who received the National Bravery Award for her heroic actions in preventing a young student from entering a busy crosswalk. Gabby’s quick thinking and training as a safety patrol member were highlighted, making her one of only two students nationwide to earn this prestigious medal this year.

Mayor West praised Gabby for her bravery and presented her with a certificate of citizenship, acknowledging her significant contribution to school safety. The council expressed pride in Gabby's achievement, emphasizing the importance of such acts in the community.

Following the recognition, the council moved to certify a closed meeting held earlier in the day, confirming that only public business matters were discussed. The proposed agenda was approved unanimously, and the council opened the floor for public comments.

Christina Tewen addressed the council regarding an agricultural text amendment, urging amendments based on recommendations from the Agricultural Advisory Committee and the Farm Bureau. Her comments reflect ongoing community engagement in local governance and the importance of incorporating expert advice into legislative processes.
