Community leaders demand accountability in education funding debate

In a recent government meeting, discussions centered around community engagement and financial decisions impacting local education. Acknowledging the challenges posed by current tax rates, a speaker expressed concern that despite efforts, the funding remains insufficient for the needs of the community.

The meeting also addressed a recent controversy regarding Dr. Oates, with a speaker apologizing for misinformation circulated on social media about a supposed bonus he was set to receive. Dr. Oates clarified his intention to decline any bonus, emphasizing his commitment to the community.

Placehette Lewis, another speaker, highlighted the progress of students in Rockdale County but criticized the lack of acknowledgment from Dr. Oates towards the community's contributions. She expressed a desire for more collaborative dialogue rather than being encouraged to simply participate in reading sessions with students.

Additionally, the Newton County Schools Board of Education made a significant decision by voting against the superintendent's recommendation to maintain the current millage rate of 16 mills. Instead, they opted for a reduced rate of 15.75 mills, reflecting ongoing discussions about fiscal responsibility and community needs in education funding.
