City approves major drainage project to combat flooding

In a recent city council meeting, officials authorized a significant drainage improvement project aimed at mitigating localized flooding in the Ranchettes area. The council approved an agreement with Austin Underground Incorporated for the construction of the Ranchettes 2 and 3 Central Drainage Project Phase 2, which is a continuation of the already completed Phase 1. The project will be funded through the stormwater program's sales tax revenue and a FEMA pre-disaster mitigation grant, totaling $1,261,296.50.

Ryan Beardmore, the stormwater program manager, outlined that the project will enhance drainage utilities and roadway improvements along Monarch Drive, specifically between Cedar Park Drive and Lone Star Drive. The construction is expected to last approximately six months, with an on-site meeting planned for August to inform local residents about the project scope.

Additionally, the council discussed the Lakeline Boulevard shared use path project, which aims to create a 10-foot wide path connecting existing trails along Lakeline Boulevard. This project spans approximately 3.9 miles and will involve various infrastructure improvements, including creek crossings and ADA ramps. The design is set to comply with federal standards and is partially funded through the community development corporation, with further funding anticipated from federal sources.

The council selected Lockwood, Andrews, and Newnan Incorporated as the engineering firm for the project, with a contract amount not to exceed $1,050,000. The firm was chosen based on its extensive experience with similar projects and its comprehensive design approach.

Both projects reflect the city's commitment to improving infrastructure and enhancing community safety through effective stormwater management and pedestrian accessibility.
