Rockdale County Schools celebrate record graduation and achievement rates

In a recent meeting, the Rockdale County Public Schools (RCPS) administration highlighted significant academic achievements over the past six years, emphasizing a commitment to continuous improvement in education. The district reported its highest four-year core graduation rate for the class of 2023, surpassing both metropolitan Atlanta averages and the state graduation rate. Notably, the Career and Technical Education (CTAE) graduation rate reached an impressive 99.36%, reflecting the district's focus on career pathways.

The administration also noted a marked increase in Advanced Placement (AP) participation, with the number of students scoring at levels three, four, and five on AP exams rising from 316 to 538 in the latest testing cycle. All high schools in the district have been recognized as AP honor schools, and there has been a record number of nominees for the Governor's Honors Program.

In terms of state assessments, RCPS reported gains in reading proficiency among third, fifth, and eighth graders, with eighth graders outperforming both Metro Risa and state averages in key subjects. Importantly, no schools in the district have been identified as low-performing by federal standards in the past six years, a stark contrast to neighboring districts.

The district has also expanded its Career and Technical Education offerings, introducing programs in barbering, cosmetology, and HVAC certification to meet workforce demands. The end-of-pathway assessment pass rate reached its highest level in six years, indicating successful student outcomes in vocational training.

The board of education received accolades for its innovative approaches to career readiness and public health, having been awarded the Leading Edge Award five times. Additionally, the district has maintained a partnership with Kids Docs on Wheels, providing essential health services, including immunizations for students.

Despite these achievements, Superintendent Veroka acknowledged ongoing challenges, particularly in literacy, as more students enter the system with learning deficits. The district is committed to addressing these needs through targeted literacy instruction and resources, as mandated by recent state legislation.

Overall, the meeting underscored RCPS's dedication to enhancing educational outcomes while recognizing the work still needed to support all students effectively.
