City plans major upgrade to public works facility after decades

During a recent government meeting, city officials discussed the long-awaited plans for a new public works facility, a project that has been in the works for over a decade. The proposed facility's costs have risen significantly, exceeding previous estimates, but officials believe the figures are aligned with current market conditions.

The public works department, which employs 34 full-time staff and typically hires nine seasonal workers, manages a wide range of services including street maintenance, drinking water safety, and solid waste management. The department operates a fleet of over 56 vehicles and serves approximately 4,000 residential and commercial accounts, ensuring essential services are maintained in all weather conditions.

Historically, the public works team has operated from a site that has become increasingly inadequate over the years. The current facility has been in use for over 50 years, and officials noted that as the city has grown, the space has become more constrained. In 2008, the city acquired a new property to build a facility, but it was deemed too small. In 2021, an additional property was purchased, allowing for a more comprehensive plan.

The new facility is intended to consolidate operations into a single location, enhancing efficiency and service delivery. Officials indicated that there is still potential for future development on the site, including discussions about a possible law and justice center.
