Rustburg High School boys track team crowned state champions

During a recent Campbell County Board of Supervisors meeting, the community celebrated significant achievements in both athletics and heroism. The highlight of the evening was the recognition of the Rustburg High School boys track team, who were honored for winning the Virginia High School League Class 3 State Championship. Coach Gerald Mosley and team representatives were present as the board read a proclamation detailing the team's accomplishments, including individual state titles earned by Jamere Fleming in the 100-meter dash and Elijah Sherrard in both the 200 and 400-meter dashes. The team also triumphed in the 4x100 meter relay, marking the school's second state championship in its history, the first being in 1978.

Board member Mr. Hardy praised Coach Mosley for his dedication to the students and the community, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and hard work in achieving such a prestigious title. He noted that the championship not only reflects the athletes' efforts but also the commitment of the coaching staff and the support of the community.

In addition to the athletic recognition, the board honored 9-year-old Maddox Massey for his heroic actions in saving a toddler from drowning at a local pool. On June 21, 2024, Maddox's quick response and bravery were credited with preventing a potential tragedy, earning him commendation from the board for his courage and initiative.

The meeting underscored the spirit of community pride and the impact of individual contributions, whether through athletic excellence or acts of heroism.
