City manager pushes for urgent canal cleanup action

The city has been proactive in reaching out to county officials, including the county administrator and local commissioners, to urge them to take responsibility for the canal's maintenance. Despite some initial work by the county, progress has stalled, prompting city officials to consider further actions, including potentially citing the county for code violations.

Commission members discussed the possibility of sending a formal letter from the mayor's office to the county mayor, requesting immediate intervention to clean the canal. They also considered the option of posting a sign at the site to inform residents of the canal's ownership and provide a contact number for complaints.

In addition to the canal discussion, the commission approved a change in the date for the next meeting from July 9 to July 8 to accommodate the mayor's participation in a Sister Cities program trip. They also voted to cancel the commission meetings scheduled for August 2024, a customary practice during that month, while allowing for emergency meetings if needed.
