Bexar County plans major funding boost for community projects

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the reprogramming of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds to support various public works projects across Bexar County. The meeting highlighted a proposal to allocate $295,000 in reprogrammed funds, derived from unutilized staff salaries and incomplete projects, to a public works initiative in precinct 1.

Rebecca Morin, a representative from the city of Somerset, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to apply for CDBG funding, specifically for a solar lighting project aimed at enhancing public safety and reducing energy consumption. Morin emphasized the importance of improved visibility in her community, which aligns with the county's goals of fostering viable urban environments.

Robert Rayna from the Bexar County Economic and Community Development department provided an overview of the preliminary selection of CDBG, HOME, and Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) projects for the upcoming program year. He announced an anticipated increase in funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), projecting $3.9 million for program year 2024, a 15% rise from the previous year.

Rayna detailed the recommended allocations for CDBG funding, which include $45,000 for the Somerset Multi-Purpose Center, $150,000 for the San Antonio Food Bank, and various amounts for infrastructure improvements in cities such as Balcones Heights, Kirby, and Leon Valley. The meeting underscored the county's commitment to utilizing federal funds to support low and moderate-income individuals and enhance community development initiatives.
