During a recent government meeting, officials recognized June as Elder Abuse Awareness Month, with June 15 designated as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Nisa, the program administrator for Denton County's Adult Protective Services, emphasized the importance of this initiative, highlighting the agency's role in investigating cases of abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation affecting individuals aged 65 and older or those with significant impairments.
Nisa noted that the U.S. Census Bureau projects that by 2034, seniors will represent the largest demographic in the United States, underscoring the urgency of addressing elder abuse. She stressed that older adults are vital contributors to society and deserve to live free from abuse, neglect, and with dignity.
In addition to raising awareness, the agency provides resources and services aimed at preventing maltreatment and intervening when necessary. Attendees received informational materials on how to report suspected cases of elder abuse, further promoting community involvement in safeguarding vulnerable populations. The meeting concluded with a proclamation affirming the significance of the month and day dedicated to this critical issue.
