Firefighters Unite to Revive Training and Community Safety

During a recent government meeting, Lawrence County officials recognized local students Isaac Phillips and Gavin Wissman for their outstanding achievement in the National Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America competition, where they placed fourth nationwide for their efforts in combating food insecurity. The recognition was presented by Commissioner Colton Hovland, who expressed gratitude for the students' contributions to the community.

The meeting also addressed the challenges faced by the county's Firefighter Association, which has struggled with participation and training in recent years. Larry Dickies and Dave Grove, representatives of the association, highlighted their efforts to revitalize the organization, noting a recent increase in attendance at meetings. They emphasized the need for a central training location to facilitate better access for firefighters across the county, which would also aid in applying for necessary grants for training equipment.

The association is actively seeking a piece of land, ideally around four acres, to establish a training facility. This location would serve as a hub for various training exercises, improving coordination among departments and enhancing overall community safety. The representatives underscored the importance of having a central site to ensure maximum participation and efficiency in training efforts.

Additionally, the association is planning a one-day fire school on August 24, featuring multiple training classes aimed at addressing specific skills needed in emergency situations. This initiative reflects the association's commitment to improving training and collaboration among firefighters in the region.
