New board member vows to champion educational equity

During a recent policy committee meeting held on June 25, the Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) reviewed several key policies for the upcoming school year. The committee discussed the employment of foreign nationals, protocols for students with anaphylactic allergies, and a new emergency management policy. These policies are set to be presented to the board for their first reading.

The committee also reflected on its activities over the past school year, noting that it had considered 16 policies, with several still in development. As the committee prepares for the new academic year, these pending policies will be prioritized.

In a brief president's report, board members celebrated the recent Juneteenth celebration and welcomed new student board member Hafsa, who expressed her commitment to advocating for educational equity and resource allocation to support a diverse student body.

Superintendent Dr. George Briddell provided updates on staffing and the district's ongoing reorganization efforts aimed at improving special education services. He welcomed Christina Catalano as the new chief academic officer and highlighted the district's achievement in financial stewardship, noting that AACPS has received the Government Finance Officers Association's Certificate of Achievement for 41 consecutive years.

Dr. Briddell also announced the formal launch of a new strategic plan on July 1, developed with community input. The plan emphasizes inclusivity, aiming to ensure that all students feel they belong and can succeed within the school system. The full strategic plan is accessible online for public review.
