City of Oshkosh enacts strict penalties for false emergency calls

During a recent Oshkosh City Council meeting, members approved several key ordinances, including annexations and a new measure aimed at addressing false emergency reporting.

The council unanimously endorsed Ordinance 24-393, which facilitates the annexation of three parcels from the town of Oshkosh, specifically along the west side of Vinland. This move is expected to enhance service delivery in the area, as noted by council members who emphasized the importance of strategically aligning resources.

Another significant development was the approval of Ordinance 24-394, which amends the city’s municipal code to prohibit false reporting of emergencies. Council member Nichols raised concerns regarding the jurisdictional implications of the ordinance, particularly how it applies to neighboring towns that utilize Oshkosh's fire and EMS services. City Attorney Lawrence clarified that while the ordinance applies strictly within city limits, it aligns with state law, allowing for easier prosecution of offenders within the city.

The ordinance aims to discourage misuse of emergency services, imposing penalties for non-emergency calls. Although the city has the authority to refer cases to the district attorney's office for prosecution outside city limits, the new ordinance will streamline the process for incidents occurring within Oshkosh.
