City plans major stormwater funding overhaul to protect homes

In a recent city commission meeting, officials discussed a significant long-term stormwater management initiative, emphasizing the need for a sustainable funding source. The city manager outlined a proposed 3 to 4-year contract aimed at identifying and addressing stormwater issues, with an initial investment of $1.5 million for a comprehensive study. Current stormwater fees, set at $5 per month, were highlighted as insufficient compared to neighboring cities, prompting calls for a reevaluation of rates to ensure adequate protection for residents.

The commission unanimously approved the motion to proceed with the stormwater initiative, marking it as a crucial first step in addressing infrastructure needs akin to those of wastewater treatment facilities.

Additionally, the commission designated the mayor as the primary voting delegate for the upcoming 2024 Florida League of Cities Annual Conference, with the deputy mayor serving as the alternate. This decision was made to ensure effective representation and engagement at the conference, which will take place in Hollywood, Florida, in mid-August.

Concerns were also raised regarding the community's use of recreational facilities, specifically the Trotwood Tennis Courts, which currently accommodate both tennis and pickleball. Residents expressed a desire to revert the courts back to exclusive tennis use, prompting discussions about involving the Parks and Recreation Committee for further evaluation.

The meeting concluded with a reminder of the upcoming budget workshop scheduled for July 15, where commissioners will review a comprehensive budget document. The Department of Transportation also announced plans to resurface State Road 434, with the city agreeing to maintain certain aesthetic features at the project’s intersections.
