In a recent government meeting, key figures from the transportation sector gathered to discuss the implementation of Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) technology, aimed at enhancing road safety. Leah Shahum, executive director of the Vision Zero Network, along with Benito Perez from Transportation for America and Cecilia Black, a Seattle transit organizer, expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts to improve mobility for all.
The meeting included a briefing on the ISA feasibility report, which was developed in response to a budget proviso from 2023. The ISA technology is designed to prevent vehicles from exceeding speed limits, positioning it as a crucial component of a comprehensive safe system approach to transportation. Other jurisdictions have begun to adopt this technology, and the proposal discussed involves piloting ISA within the city’s vehicle fleet.
The briefing featured a presentation by researchers from the USDOT Volpe National Transportation Systems Center, including Alex Epstein, Sarah Yehudik, and Alyssa Berdur. They provided insights into ISA's potential applications and its alignment with the National Roadway Safety Strategy. The researchers emphasized that their findings are based on independent analysis and do not reflect official US DOT policy.
The meeting underscored the importance of innovative safety measures in transportation, with a focus on fostering collaboration among various stakeholders to enhance public safety on the roads. Further discussions are anticipated as the city considers the next steps in implementing ISA technology.
