New building permits surge as veterans gain free access

In a recent government meeting, officials reviewed building permits and discussed new legislation aimed at supporting veterans with disabilities. The meeting began with the approval of minutes from the previous session, followed by a comprehensive report on building permits for May and June 2024. During this period, the municipality issued a total of 97 permits, including one new home in May valued at $6.6 million, generating $49,377 in revenue. June saw a similar number of permits, with two new homes valued at $3.6 million, bringing in $37,572.

A significant highlight was the introduction of Public Act 1030621, which will take effect on January 1, 2024. This law allows for free building permits for veterans with disabilities, specifically for improvements that accommodate their disabilities, such as ramps and wider doorways. While officials noted that the impact on revenue remains uncertain, they acknowledged the potential for a new category in future building reports related to these permits.

The meeting also addressed ongoing stormwater management issues, with no new concerns raised by board members. Additionally, two solar project decommissioning plans were approved, with bonds set at $354,102.36 for the Lincoln project and $229,829.83 for the Jeffrey Road project.

Lastly, an update on the Title VI plan was provided, indicating that further discussions would take place in the coming month as officials work with the Department of Transportation and their consultants to refine the plan.
