Kitsap County proclaims Farmers Market Week to boost local economy

During a recent meeting of the Kitsap County Board of Commissioners, the board unanimously approved the appointment of Janet Grimley to the Manchester Community Advisory Council. The decision was met with gratitude for Grimley's service.

The meeting also featured a significant resolution proclaiming the week of August 4th through 10th, 2024, as Kitsap County Farmers Market Week. This initiative aligns with the National Farmers Market Week and aims to highlight the vital role of farmers markets in the local economy and community.

Jess Sappington from Washington State University Extension and Rebecca Landerholm, co-manager of the Poulsbo Farmers Market, presented data illustrating the positive impact of farmers markets in the region. They reported a 17% increase in total sales across five local markets from 2022 to 2023, emphasizing the importance of these markets in supporting small businesses and enhancing food access for low-income residents.

The presentation highlighted the success of food access programs, including SNAP benefits, which saw over $25,000 distributed in 2023, with nearly all funds redeemed at local markets. The SNAP Market Match program, which doubles SNAP dollars for produce purchases, also contributed significantly to local food access efforts.

The board expressed strong support for the proclamation, with members reflecting on the growth and success of farmers markets in Kitsap County over the years. The resolution was passed with enthusiasm, encouraging community members to engage with local markets in the upcoming weeks.

The meeting concluded with no additional comments from the county administrator, and the public was invited to address the board on regular business matters.
