Community leaders unite to tackle abandoned properties and broadband access

In a recent government meeting, Jeremy provided several updates on community initiatives and upcoming events. He reported that efforts are underway to address abandoned properties in Franklin Grove, Amboy, and potentially Harmon, through the Strong Communities Grant Program facilitated by the Illinois Housing Development Authority. This initiative aims to collaborate with local municipalities to revitalize these areas, utilizing funds secured a year and a half ago.

Additionally, the Lee County Broadband Breakthrough Group is making strides in enhancing internet services across the county. They have gathered Requests for Information (RFIs) from various Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and are in the process of scheduling meetings to discuss the development of broadband services and potential projects eligible for BEED funding. The state of Illinois is investing approximately $1.9 billion in broadband infrastructure, with several ISPs actively working on projects in Lee County.

The meeting also highlighted ongoing budget preparations, with department heads submitting their budget drafts. A budget overview meeting is scheduled for July 25, which will kick off the budget hearing process.

Lastly, Jeremy reminded attendees of the upcoming Floodplain 101 presentation on July 29, from 6 to 8 PM at the old courthouse. This event will feature insights from the zoning office and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, along with a Q&A session for community members.
