New Bedford Schools Launch Ambitious Leadership Overhaul

In a recent meeting of the New Bedford Public Schools, significant changes and initiatives were announced aimed at enhancing the educational landscape of the district. The discussions centered around new leadership roles, curriculum development, and a strong commitment to the fine arts.

Trina, a key figure in the district, is set to lead a comprehensive vision for teaching and learning, supported by a robust team including Brian, the newly appointed Chief Academic Officer. This role is pivotal in overseeing curriculum implementation, particularly in middle schools, where the district aims to improve educational outcomes.

The meeting highlighted the district's ongoing investment in fine arts, facilitated by resources from the Student Opportunity Act. Mark Souza will take over as the Director of Fine Arts, succeeding Lynn Souza, who has established a strong program. The district aims to increase student participation in fine arts, with a goal of exceeding the 10% participation rate seen in peer districts.

Additionally, the introduction of new administrators was a focal point. Mike Rayner will serve as the Curriculum Data and Assessment Manager for the arts, overseeing a comprehensive program that includes music, theater, and visual arts. Emily Quirk has been appointed as the Curriculum Data and Assessment Manager for Science, bringing experience from Providence and California, while Bill Manchester will focus on improving math instruction, particularly in middle schools.

The meeting also welcomed several new principals, including Mary Carvallo at Congdon Elementary and Kathleen Reardon at Ashley Elementary, both of whom bring extensive experience to their roles. Justine Santos will transition back to Normandin Middle School, where she previously served as assistant principal.

Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent emphasized the importance of these appointments and the strategic planning that has gone into shaping the district's future.
