East Boulder zoning update aims for transformative change

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the ongoing East Boulder zoning update, a project aimed at enhancing the area's development and community engagement. The meeting was led by a representative stepping in for Kathleen King, who previously presented on the project in October 2023 and March 2024.

The East Boulder subcommunity, one of ten in the city, has undergone a comprehensive planning process from 2020 to 2022, which included extensive community input. This process has laid the groundwork for a vision that promotes small-scale industrial and manufacturing spaces, life sciences, and technical office environments, while also introducing housing opportunities in traditionally employment-focused areas.

Key areas of change within East Boulder have been identified, where the community anticipates significant development. These areas will see the implementation of form-based code updates designed to enhance the unique character of East Boulder, promote economic resilience, and improve walkability. The updates also align with revisions to the comprehensive plan land use map, which now includes mixed-use transit-oriented and industrial developments.

The meeting highlighted the importance of community feedback, with several focus group meetings and a business survey conducted to gauge local needs. The public review draft of the proposed changes has been available for comment since May 28 and will remain open until the end of the week, emphasizing the city's commitment to involving residents in the planning process.

As the project moves forward, officials are seeking input on the draft form-based code updates, marking a significant step in realizing the vision for East Boulder and ensuring that all planning documents work cohesively towards a common goal.
