DeLand unveils ambitious comprehensive plan for growth

In a recent city commission meeting in DeLand, Florida, officials discussed significant updates to the city's comprehensive plan, which aims to guide future growth and development. The meeting highlighted the progress made on various initiatives, including the installation of a marquee for local schools and the resolution of air conditioning issues at the children's center.

Planning Director Carol Coon presented the first reading of an ordinance amending the comprehensive plan, which includes revisions to key elements such as future land use, transportation, housing, and public services. Notably, the plan introduces two new elements: economic development and place-making. Coon emphasized the importance of community engagement, referencing a survey conducted earlier this year that garnered 310 responses on topics like biking, shopping, and housing types.

The updated plan reflects a projected population increase in DeLand, with estimates suggesting a rise from approximately 41,384 in 2023 to nearly 59,000 by 2050. This growth will necessitate careful planning and infrastructure development, particularly in areas identified as future activity and employment centers.

The commission also addressed the timeline for the marquee installation, aiming for completion before the upcoming school year. The meeting concluded with a motion to approve the consent agenda, which passed without opposition, indicating a collaborative effort among city officials to address community needs and enhance local services.
