New EC director appointed amid teacher shortage crisis

In a recent government meeting, the board approved critical nursing contracts aimed at supporting students with individualized education plans (IEPs). The contracts, which total an estimated $682,262 for nursing services and $1.8 million for related services, are essential for providing skilled nursing support to nine students requiring specialized care, including tracheotomy and low oxygen level management. These services are mandated by federal law, although board members noted that the funding received does not fully cover the costs, highlighting the challenges of unfunded mandates.

The board also discussed the hiring of exceptional needs teachers, a growing concern due to a shortage in the field. In a positive development, Amber Gover was appointed as the new Exceptional Children (EC) director for Craven County Schools. Gover, a long-time employee with extensive experience in EC classrooms, is expected to enhance the program's effectiveness.

Additionally, the meeting included a human resources report, which was approved after a roll call vote. The board emphasized the importance of attracting and retaining qualified teachers in the face of ongoing staffing challenges, particularly in special education.
