City approves major rezoning for new housing development

In a recent city commission meeting, the Parkland government approved a series of resolutions and ordinances aimed at redeveloping approximately 21 acres of land previously occupied by the Heron Bay Golf Course. The commission unanimously voted in favor of a resolution to establish pickleball courts at the Parkland Golf and Country Club, signaling a commitment to enhancing recreational facilities in the area.

The meeting also featured a public hearing regarding the rezoning of the land from an agricultural designation to a low-density residential classification. This change will allow for the development of 52 single-family detached homes, as outlined in the proposed site plan submitted by Toll Brothers. The project, named Saltgrass, is designed to accommodate the growing housing needs within the community.

Caitlin Forbes, representing the city, detailed the specifics of the application, which includes requests for variances related to side yard setbacks, lot width, and lot coverage. The commission emphasized that while the items were read into the record collectively, each would be voted on individually.

The former golf course site has been under city ownership since its purchase in 2021, following its closure in 2019. The commission's actions reflect a strategic move to repurpose the land for residential use, aligning with the city’s development goals and addressing housing demands in the region. The next steps will involve further architectural reviews and community input as the project progresses.
