City of Seabrook moves to terminate costly tourism agreement

In a recent government meeting, the City of Seabrook, Texas, took significant steps towards enhancing local law enforcement and addressing community concerns regarding tourism funding.

The council unanimously approved a resolution authorizing a grant application to the United States Department of Justice for $101,527 aimed at achieving accreditation for the Seabrook Police Department. This grant, which requires no local match, will fund essential resources including evidence management software and security equipment, as well as overtime for personnel involved in the accreditation process. The city manager was authorized to execute all necessary documents related to this initiative.

Additionally, the council discussed an extension agreement with Elsa, Inc. for the inspection and potential repair of the city's water wells, extending the contract to January 1, 2025. The initial phase will focus solely on inspections, with repairs to be addressed as needed within the existing water budget.

A more contentious topic arose regarding the agreement with the Bay Area Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau. Several council members expressed dissatisfaction with the return on investment from the bureau, noting that local hotels felt the funding was not beneficial. After extensive discussion, the council voted unanimously to terminate the agreement effective January 1, 2025. Members emphasized the need to redirect funds towards initiatives that would more directly support local businesses, such as improved signage.
