Student champions free health screenings for peers

During a recent Capistrano Unified School District meeting, student Brooke Walker was recognized for her initiative to enhance health awareness among peers. Brooke approached district officials with a proposal to provide free annual health screenings for students, a project that has garnered support from local businesses and health organizations.

Renee Johnson, the district's safety and student services director, has been instrumental in coordinating this effort. Two locations in Rancho Santa Margarita and San Clemente have already committed to offering these screenings. The initiative aims to focus on early detection of health issues, particularly for middle school students aged 9 to 12, who may not have access to regular health evaluations.

Trustees expressed their appreciation for Brooke's dedication and the collaborative efforts of district staff and local health providers. Discussions also touched on the importance of physical exams for high school athletes, with a reminder that while these exams are still conducted, the new initiative will provide additional resources for younger students.
