In a recent government meeting, the Economic Development Authority (EDA) presented a predevelopment agreement for an affordable apartment complex aimed at addressing housing needs in the community. Lauren Deitz, representing the EDA, outlined the project, which is a revised version of a proposal submitted last year that did not receive funding due to insufficient scoring in the competitive Minnesota Housing tax credit program.
Deitz explained that the current proposal focuses solely on family housing, comprising 60 units with 2, 3, and 4-bedroom configurations, while plans for senior housing will be deferred to a future phase. The rental rates are designed to be affordable, targeting households earning between 30% to 50% of the area median income, with monthly rents ranging from approximately $600 for a two-bedroom unit to $1,300 for a four-bedroom unit.
To strengthen the application for funding, the EDA is emphasizing community support as a critical factor. Additionally, the EDA plans to allocate $500,000 for necessary road improvements to ensure access to the site, which remains a vital component of the project’s infrastructure.
The meeting highlighted the ongoing efforts to enhance affordable housing options in the area, reflecting a commitment to addressing the community's housing challenges.
