Bartender faces scrutiny after serving alcohol to minors

A bartender from Thirsty Cactus, who has been employed there since its opening in May 2022, confirmed that she primarily works at this location and has undergone training to prevent serving alcohol to minors. She emphasized her commitment to checking IDs and acknowledged a past mistake that led to an undercover operation by the police on November 30, 2023. During this operation, an intoxicated patron named Eugene was observed leaving the bar, prompting police intervention. The bartender stated she served Eugene four beers and two mixed drinks but did not recognize his level of intoxication until he attempted to leave.

Police Officer Allison Clark, who has served in the West Dallas Police Department for over eight years, detailed her involvement in the compliance checks. She reported that Eugene appeared highly intoxicated when contacted outside the bar and had to be assisted by others. Officer Clark noted that the bartender was cooperative during their conversation about the incident, and while she did not issue any citations at that time, she warned against overserving patrons.

Further scrutiny was placed on a subsequent compliance check conducted on April 8, 2024, where another underage individual was served without an ID check. Officer Ryan Schultz confirmed that the underage patron was served a Bud Light at Thirsty Cactus, leading to a citation for the bartender involved. The police emphasized the importance of these compliance checks, which occur biannually, to ensure that establishments adhere to alcohol service laws.
