City Council Faces Urgent Plea for Temporary Worship Facilities

In a regular city council meeting held on July 16, community members gathered to discuss pressing local issues, including a request from a local church impacted by Hurricane Barry. Pastor Jordan Appleby of the Saltwater Revival Pirate Church addressed the council, seeking a temporary variance to allow the barge, which serves as their worship venue, to utilize temporary restroom facilities and food trucks for congregational gatherings.

Appleby explained that the church has been displaced due to the hurricane, which has hindered their ability to hold services. He emphasized the importance of their weekly gatherings, which include worship and community meals, and highlighted that the requested temporary facilities are similar to those used at local events, such as the Houston Rodeo and Seabrook celebrations.

The pastor urged the council to consider the request not only for the church's operations but also for the 32 employees of the barge who are currently without income due to the venue's closure. He reassured the council that the proposed facilities would not pose safety hazards, citing his own comfort with using portable restrooms.
