Homeowner fights city code after devastating hailstorm damage

In a recent government meeting, Round Rock resident Salma Flores raised concerns regarding a city zoning code that prohibits the construction of carports within 30 feet of property lines. Flores, who lives at 1507 Nor Middle Circle, highlighted the impact of this regulation following a severe hailstorm on September 24, 2023, which resulted in significant damage to her vehicles and property.

Flores explained that the existing code, amended in 2022, restricts all accessory buildings, including carports, from being built in the front street yard. She argued that this limitation not only compromises the protection of vehicles but also raises questions about the rationale behind the code's assertion that carports could hinder the health and welfare of the neighborhood.

During her address, Flores requested an amendment to the code that would allow carports to be constructed within 15 feet of property lines, emphasizing the need for structures that can safeguard vehicles from extreme weather conditions. Her appeal reflects a growing concern among residents about the balance between zoning regulations and the practical needs of homeowners in the face of increasingly severe weather events.
