City Council Approves Veterans Memorial to Honor Patriotism

During a recent government meeting, officials introduced and discussed several key ordinances aimed at enhancing community infrastructure and honoring local veterans.

Ordinance number 86-2024 was presented for its first reading, which authorizes a payment of $128,980 to the city of Barberton for the resurfacing of Taylor Road. This ordinance was declared an emergency measure, allowing for expedited processing.

Additionally, ordinance number 87-2024 was introduced, which authorizes the purchase of jet black granite materials for the Norton Veterans Memorial Park from Summit Memorials Incorporated, with a budget not to exceed $77,000. This ordinance also received emergency status to facilitate timely completion ahead of Memorial Day. The council moved to waive the second and third readings of this ordinance, emphasizing the urgency to have the memorial ready for the upcoming holiday.

Council members expressed gratitude towards the steering committee for their diligent work on the project, highlighting the importance of instilling a sense of patriotism in the community, particularly among the youth. Discussions included the hope for a Memorial Day parade, which has not occurred in recent years, and the significance of memorializing veterans to foster appreciation for their sacrifices.
