City plans veterans memorial to honor local heroes

In a recent government meeting, Mayor Zita announced a series of community events scheduled for July, including a concert featuring the band Escape on July 6, followed by additional performances throughout the month. Notably, the month will culminate in a fireworks display on July 27, coinciding with a performance by the Stringer Brothers band.

The meeting also highlighted the progress on a long-awaited veterans memorial, which has been in development for several years. City Administrator Lowry presented a model of the memorial, which will be located between the community center and the administration building. The project has received community input through a steering committee, and the administration aims to complete it by May 1, 2025, in time for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Memorial Day.

The committee's recommendation to place the memorial in its chosen location was based on factors such as visibility and security, ensuring it remains a respectful and accessible tribute to veterans. The council plans to vote on waiving readings and adopting emergency language to expedite the marble order, which has a lead time of five to six months.

Council members expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts that have brought the memorial project to this stage, emphasizing its significance as a reminder of the sacrifices made by veterans. The committee will continue to work on details such as naming opportunities for benches and pavers, inviting further community involvement in the project.
